Longreach and what a reach
This town is worth the reach no
matter how you get here. Our drive up from Tambo was really enjoyable
talking out the chicken racing the night before. The stop in Blackall for
fuel and breakfast was memorable having the kangaroos join us at the park where
we stopped to eat. We saw 7 however as we were getting back in the car a
local told me there are normally 9 that frequent the park. the people all
over Australia are just so friendly and will stop and talk about all most
anything (just be care full if discussing sports the two Queensland teams had
just lost both major final's this week both by two points both matches were a
joy to watch even though I still don't fully understand the rules of AFL- sorry
for the side track).
Back to arriving in Longreach.
We pulled in just as the travel information office opens. Yes, it
is an office it original use was the first QANTAS tick it office. What a
welcome and so helpful. Karen had trouble deciding which expenses we were
going to do. So many, if the once we did not do are half as good as those
we did you need at least 5 nights here and a week to recover. As you will
see Wednesday 8.30 pickup from Outback Pioneers office in Eagle street (main
street though the town). Started with the town's crier then a real
stagecoach ride on a Cobb and Co franchisee, the first franchising
company in the world. Ho, and this is where the cobb loaf design comes from as
Cobb and co insisted their passengers were served bread and not damper, but in
the shape of damper. Don't know why as the damper we had with our
dinner was fantastic (another experience; I know, too many words; but a lot to
say about our time here, be gratefully I am writing it). Anyway
back to the Cobb and co. coach ride sorry was holding on too much and missed
the pictures if the emus and the kangaroos, but hopefully you can feel my fear
from the images included. I was not the gentleman I normally am here as
there was only one seat at the front and I left Karen to fend for
herself as I thought she was going inside. No see took the last first class see at the
back. I always knew my wife was not a peasant.
Once back at Outback Pioneers we had a walk down Australia’s pioneering
history with a film and show (some of the local jokes I missed but very
enjoyable). Oh yes we are still very dusty
at this point from the coach ride, even after getting a wind shower when we got
off. So back to the room for a real show
and change of close before our 4.45pm pick up for a trip down the river and
dinner and show ( I said I would get back to the damper). 1pm by now so a quick stop on route at the
local bakers Merino’s, we had found this day one. Ice coffees drunk and great rolls eaten, just
read the sign on how to order will make yours and the staffs life easier. Thanks Karen for the save on day one.
While back at the room quick wash
for us and our cloths, yes full laundry facilities, pool, sauna and great
helpful staff here at the Longreach Motor Inn.
On our coach trip eating scones after (Wednesday morning) we meet the
guest in the room next door. So friendly.
Now 4.45pm Wednesday evening and
out for a boat trip show and dinner.
What an experience thank Smithy and his team and not forgetting Lue the
chef and John Hawkes the entertainer. Yes
‘entertainer’ in the write word to describe this man, even though he calls
himself a ‘stockman’. Not saying
anymore except come and experience it for yourself.
We are off north now and still
have museums to see. Did do the Powerhouse
museum Tuesday. But we have heard some
people take six hours going through the QANTAS museum, first had knowledge as
this was from people that joined us for dinner last night and there are other
museums and things to see. Looks like a
trip back is needed. (now can I get the
pictures done before Karen gets up – No will update when there done). Karen will also correct all my typos and spelling mistakes.
