Time with the Watsons

Couldn't believe it when I saw on Facebook (as you do) that my older Canadian cousin and his family were coming to Australia for Christmas and New Year.  Even though we saw Don earlier in the year and the rest of the family last year in London.  

After lengthy messages back and forth - Tuesday 19th December was chosen in Broadbeach.  David and I haven't done the Gold Coast yet as it is just over an hour away from Nat & Robs.  We had decided we can go and explore this area in Jan/Feb when the schools holidays are over.

Don had rented an apartment on the 13th floor of one of the high risers.  As he said, Broadbeach reminded him of Las Vegas with the casino and a huge shopping mall just across the road.  

It was lovely catching up with them and reminisce.  The twins seemed to be enjoying themselves too but decided not to join us for dinner.  Don booked the local surf club for the 4 of us ,which is always a good meal.  It was fun to meet up, who knows, next time we might actually make it to Vancouver again.

Drive from Canberra to Melbourne

We had originally planned on driving down to Bateman's Bay and following the coast road along to Melbourne.  This would have taken 3-4 days.  As we had missed doing the coast road down from Sydney due to the poor weather we decided to stick to driving through the middle and continuing to enjoy the rolling countryside.  It also meant we could be in Lakes Entrance in 4 hours rather than 2 days.  It was a lovely drive apart from the bucket in the middle of a 3 lane section of motorway which the car in front knocked right in front of us and David had no option but to go directly over it.  Fortunately no damage (or photos) to the car just a heart workout. Lakes Entrance is lovely - just as you would imagine from the name.   This area is lovely and we would comeback again as we didn't have an extra day to travel around it (from choice).  The owner of Albatross Motel, where we were staying, suggested the Eco boat trip and the ferry ride to Raymond Island...

The Sunshine Coast

You can tell we are waning a little by the infrequent posts😊  Most of that is due to the freaky weather Qld is having at the moment.  Rain here soaks you to the skin if you get caught in it so we have had to be careful with our activities and choose days when no rain was expected.  This has been tricky as their wet humid season has started a month early.  Temperatures are still in the high 30s with Brassall often up to 35+ so trips to the coast cools everything down. Nat went back to school on the 22nd but before she did we had a lovely day on the coast at Redcliffe - the only really sunny day all week.   Redcliffe What a lovely place Redcliffe is.  It is mentioned quite a bit in a book I have been reading  by an Australian author Trent Dalton "Boy Swallows Universe" which has just been made into a Netflix series.  It was quite cool as I knew loads of the places mentioned in the book as it is set in Brisbane/Ipswich. Daintree National Park

I changed the tyre so off of the Daintree ferry.  Lovely trip if you can see from the last post.  We could not; as it is a flatbed car ferry and we were in the middle of the middle row.  Over the river car travelling well on the spare.  Decided to go to our overnight accommodation rather than into the next town - Daintree River Lodge.  On arrival our lovely host suggested an early morning boat trip from the jetty right next to the hotel down the Daintree river.  Trip booked we settled in for the night.   The Daintree river trip was great.  Saw lots of crocodiles and was pleased I made Karen come off the rampway last night.  Even better all four tyres still OK but off to Mossman for a tyre company.  Arrived and the machines were all over the car damage tyre checked.  No chance for a repair so two new tyres on the front best two on the back and final good tyre moved to the spare rim.  All done and back on the road in un...
